What are Dental Crowns?

Are you wondering whether your smile could benefit from this restoration?dental crowns

If our LaGrange, IL, family dentist Dr. James Maragos has told you that you should get a dental crown then you may be curious to understand the purpose behind this popular restoration and how your oral health could benefit.

Why do I need a dental crown?

There are many reasons why you’ll want to visit our LaGrange, IL, dentist to find out if a dental crown is necessary for maintaining that healthy smile. Just as the name suggests, this restoration is crafted to look just like the crown of a tooth. It’s even matched to the shade and color of your teeth to ensure that it blends seamlessly. No one will ever be able to tell that you have a dental crown.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you have a tooth that is damaged or weakened by decay, an infection or trauma?
  • Do you have a tooth that is broken, fractured or severely cracked?
  • Do you have to get root canal treatment or have you recently undergone this procedure?
  • Do you have a tooth that is misshapen or severely discolored?
  • Are you getting a dental bridge or dental implant to replace one or more missing teeth?

If you said “yes” to any of these questions above then a dental crown could just be the restoration you’ve been looking for to improve your smile. Plus, getting a dental crown usually takes only two trips to our office.

The first visit: We not only need to prep the tooth but also take measurements of your mouth to make sure your permanent crown offers a precise and accurate fit. We may also run x-rays to check the health of the tooth’s roots and to determine whether root canal treatment is necessary beforehand.

From there, we will numb the area around the tooth and then prepare the tooth to make room for your restoration. Lastly, we will take impressions of your mouth to send to a dental lab. A temporary crown will be placed over your tooth in the interim.

The second visit: Now that your permanent crown has been made (this usually takes about a week) and is ready to be placed, you’ll come back into the office one last time. We will check the fit of the crown and your bite to make sure the restoration fits perfectly before we cement it in place.
